MECC water/wastewater program earning accolades
BIG STONE GAP - Mountain Empire Community College tapped an awards gusher for what has evolved into the premier online water/wastewater treatment "school" in the nation.
Add the Governor's Technology Award to the growing list of awards and recognition flowing to the college's water/wastewater distance education program.
Presented recently during the Commonwealth of Virginia's Information Technology Symposium at Virginia Military Institute, the latest feather in MECC's cap recognizes excellence, innovation and effectiveness in using technology to improve the lives of Virginians, enhance government, and encourage economic development.
MECC received the Gold Award in the higher education category. The Silver Award went to George Mason University's finance system.
Other awards collected by MECC's innovative Web-based water/wastewater treatment training program include the Virginia Community College System's Technology in Education Award, the Governor's Environment Virginia Award for Innovation in Education, and the Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology Award from the International Conference on Teaching and Learning.
MECC's water/wastewater treatment training program offers the two-year associate's degree via online distance education. Initiated in 1999, the program has been partially funded by the Virginia Department of Health and the Slemp Foundation.
The program is becoming the main source for water/wastewater treatment training in the country. Most recent has been the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's approval of MECC as a sponsor of such training in that state.
